The Legal Project believes:
– All people should have access to legal services.
– Fostering collaborative relationships within the community is essential to serving the whole person, inspiring the legal profession’s commitment to pro bono and raising awareness about the importance of civil legal services in protecting people’s basic rights.
– Our communities are stronger and more economically vital when people are safe, stable and independent.
Our story began in 1995 by helping low-income, unrepresented survivors of domestic violence in the Capital Region. Over the years, our practice areas have expanded to include homeownership/foreclosure, immigration, human trafficking, veterans law, elder law (including wills, living wills, powers of attorney and health care proxies) and eviction defense. We also offer community-based, no-cost consultations and workshops to the general public, including Legally Speaking workshops, the Small Business Legal Network, Uncontested Divorce Clinics and the Veterans Law Project. Today, our services cover 14 counties in the Greater Capital Region: Albany, Columbia, Fulton, Greene, Herkimer, Montgomery, Oneida, Otsego, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Rensselaer, Warren and Washington. The Legal Project employs both staff attorneys and pro-bono volunteer attorneys from the community, enabling us to maximize the number of clients we can help with limited resources. In 2025, we assisted over 10,000 people across our programs and services. For many working families, we are the only realistic option for legal representation in vital matters pertaining to the essentials of life.
